Non-Surgical Spine Re-alignment & Treatment at JASENG

The human body has natural healing power so that when one is ill, his body uses this strong recuperative power to treat what is wrong. Jaseng Hospital of Oriental Medicine has gained recognition by the international medical society with its effective hanbang therapies. Its therapy makes use of the natural healing power to remedy the causes of lumbar disc problems and restore a healthy spine without undergoing a surgical operation. The hospital has an East-West collaborative medicine system in place to provide treatment tailored to each patient’s physical constitution and status.

Non-Surgical Spine Treatment
Chuna Manipulation

The well-trained practitioners manually adjust the patient’s displaced bones and joints. By realigning the bones and joints and correcting the spinal curve, the patients can see much benefit from chuna including pain relief, better blood circulation, and stress relief. It is a comprehensive treatment to heal abnormality in the bones, joints, and muscles; boost blood and qi circulation; and even treat degenerative bone and joint disease and osteoporosis.

Chuna Medication

It is herbal regimen to fundamentally solve lumbago, strengthen the body, and maintain the effects of chuna manipulation and other therapies. It is greatly effective in treating spine disorders, strengthening muscles and ligaments to keep the spine in corrected pose, and reducing inflammation.

Special Acupuncture

There are several special acupuncture therapies including bee venom therapy, a technique where bee venom, which is harvested and refined to be harmless to the human body, is injected; MST (Motion Style Treatment) acupuncture that inserts needles while the patient is moving to quickly relieve pain; and herbal acupuncture that injects medicinal herbal extracts into acupuncture points.

Popular among sports stars and foreigners
The hospitals’ patient list includes soccer player Ji-Sung Park, figure skating Olympic gold medalist Yuna Kim, PGA Tour golfer Kyoung-Ju Choi, and other Korean sports stars as well as Manchester United CEO David A. Gill, Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, figure skater Brain Jourbert, and many other celebrities. The hospital hires coordinators for foreigners, provide instructions in different languages, and send herbal medicine to overseas addresses.

Pro golfer Paul Casey receives treatment at JASENG

Pro golfer Paul Casey from England stated on his victory speech, "I won the championship after taking Korean Eastern Medicine Treatment."

Paul Casey (34 year old pro golfer from England) announces in his 2011 KGT Shinhan Donghae Open victory speech “I won the championship after taking Korean Eastern medicine treatment”.

Paul Casey has experienced difficulties walking and to complete the finish position due to pain caused by inflammation for over two years. He made numerous efforts to cure his injuries with Western and Eastern therapies, even changing his golf shoes, but nothing seemed to improve his condition. Casey was extremely worried about not being able to participate in this tournament due to the severe pain. But then, renowned golfer K.J. Choi introduced him to Dr. Joon-shik Shin, the founder of Jaseng Hospital, who performed herbal acupuncture on him which enabled him to play to his full potential.

After intensely treating Paul Casey, Dr. Joon-shik Shin diagnosed the golfer’s condition as follows: “Casey was not able to properly utilize his foots’ entire strength during golf swings because of an ankle injury which caused inflammation in the big toe as well as pain in the area between the big toe and the sole of the foot. I could immediately see with my bare eyes that the right toe was swollen by 50% compared to his left toe.”

Dr. Shin proceeded by inserting acupuncture needles in the big toe and into the ligament of the ankle to immediately relieve the sensation of pain and discomfort. He also prescribed joint ointment which is highly effective in easing infections and Cheongwoongbaro pills which have an excellent nerve-regenerating effect on the bones and ligaments. Casey stated that “immediately after receiving Dr. Shin’s herbal acupuncture therapy, the pain almost receded completely and walking became more comfortable”. The golfer was thrilled and spared no compliments on the amazing effects of Jaseng’s herbal remedies. Casey’s suffered from his injury for more than two years, so naturally a onetime treatment cannot bring about a complete recovery. To ensure his further healing process Casey is scheduled to visit Jaseng Hospital’s LA branch after returning to the U.S. and to continuously receive Korean Eastern treatment such as acupuncture and herbal medicine.

LA spine specialists visit Jaseng

A spine specialist from a major Los Angeles based hospital bisits Jaseng in hopes of collaborating on research.

Michael A. Kropf MD is a renowned board certified orthopaedic surgeon at the Cedars-Sinai Spine Center. His invitation was extended to him back in February of this year, when Dr. Joon-shik Shin was invited by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to give a lecture on Jaseng’s non-surgical spine treatment and research. Dr. Kropf was highly interested in Korean Eastern medicine’s approach and had hopes to collaborate shortly after.

After several rounds of discussion with Dr. Shin and members of Jaseng’s research team, Dr. Kropf stated that he was “deeply impressed by Dr. Shin’s achievement of having created optimal treatments for patients with spine and disc conditions by integrating traditional Eastern Korean medicine with conventional Western techniques.” He further elaborated by saying that he would like to further incorporate Western medicine to Jaseng’s methods to create an even more integrative approach.

While observing patients being treated during his stay, he showed the most interest in Bee Venom Acupuncture Therapy?which is highly effective for pain relief?and Chuna Herbal Medication, which regenerates bones and nerves. Based on his observations, he plans to pick a specific topic and start a full-fledged study.

Along with the joint research, Dr. Kropf also suggested a collaborative spine clinic in Santa Monica, CA, USA. With this proposal, we look forward to Jaseng’s further expansion into the U.S. market.

A balanced body is crucial for my healthy!

Is my body crooked?

Checking your body balance helps you prevent some diseases which occur due to crooked body. Checking the balance in front of a mirror may be the first step, for the kid to prevent scoliosis and for the adult to prevent various spinal disorders!

1)  Are your center points of collarbone, between eyebrows, knees & feet aligned with the philtrum and belly button?
Yes (      )      No (      )

2) Are your ears leveled?
Yes (      )      No (      )

3) Are your shoulders leveled?
Yes (      )      No (      )

4) Are your breasts leveled?
Yes (      )      No (      )

5) Are both sides of your pelvis leveled?
Yes (      )      No (      )

6) Are your hands the same length?
Yes (      )      No (      )

7) Are your knees leveled when you lie down or bend them?
Yes (      )      No (      )

8) Are your knees leveled when you lie down or pull them towards your body?
Yes (      )      No (      )

9) Are your hands the same length when you lie down or stretch both arm over your head with the palms of your hands face each other?
Yes (      )      No (      )

10) Lie down on your back without using a pillow and place your legs straight down. Are you able to put your hands underneath your waist?
Yes (      )      No (      )

If you've answered 'No' to any of above questions, you may have balance problems. You should visit a specialist to get some evaluation, and if necessary, a proper tretment. Especially, if you have noticeably crooked shoulder or pelvis, it might be a sign of spinal disorder and needs a specialist.

How to distinguish between real and false hunger

If you are feeling hungry too often, it is most likely false hunger. Oriental medicine explanis this as a lack of energy in the body. Low energy levels result in low metabolism, and thus, decrease the functions of the organs which causes dizziness and fatigue. Eating in this condition causes food to accumulate in the body as fat and fluid, instead of being used as a necessary fuel to energuze your body.

5 Commandments to eliminate false hunger

1. Increase secretion of endorphins with intensive exercise.
If you want to decrease the stress which induces false hunger, secretion of endorphins needs to be increased. Endorphins rapidly increase when you do intensive exercises such as aerobics. The sense of accomplishment after the exercise also helps a lot in relieving stress.

2. Avoid food which contains fructose.
Carbonated drinks and/or fruit juice contain high fructose corn syrup. Drinking such beverages increases your caloric intake. They also cause spikes in the blood sugar levels followed by a rapid fall, which gives the illusion of hunger. Refined sugar, enriched flour, and bleached flour also induce false hunger and can lead to rapid mood swings.

3. Increasing protein introjections
Protein inrake is proportional to the inhibition of appetite. Adding high protein food such as tofu, egg and meat in your diet will noticeably decrease false hunger.

4. Try not to confuse psychological emptiness for hunger.
If you feel hungry less than 3 hours after eating without any heavy physical activity, then it is most likely false hunger. Our body confuses psychological emptiness for hunger.

5. Drink enough water
The lack of water in your body is the main reason for the dalse hunger. Drinking 1.5 liters of water daily is recommended, so always have it near you. Try to avoid coffee and green tea, which accelerates the emission of water.

TMJ dysfunction + Face pain treated at JASENG

I finally understood why my shoulders ached all the time.

I first followed my parents to this hospital. They wanted me to check out my jaws at the hospital because they made noise every time I opened and closed my mouth. I didn’t think it was anything serious, and I came along to Jaseng, just to humor my parents. However, when Dr. Kim saw my x-ray, he said I needed to attend the hospital regularly and receive treatment. I was very shocked because I had no idea that it would be so serious. I almost cried in his office.

However, after a couple weeks the treatment didn’t seem that bad and I got used to coming to the hospital regularly. I massaged my jaws like I was supposed to, and took my medicine, and in no time I felt a definite difference.

Apparently, my neck bone is very straight. Normal necks are supposed to be curved. When the doctor taught me what it meant to have a straight neck, and all the problems that entails I felt very enlightened. I finally understood why my shoulders ached all the time. As I consciously tried to have better posture and tried to set my neck straight, I felt a lot less pressure on my neck and shoulders. So in addition to my improved jaws, my back and neck have also gotten better!

Even though the treatment was painful and kind of scary at first, I am really glad that I received it. I’ll be careful and continue with my massages and consciously have good posture though, so that I won’t have to come back.

A poor posture damages lumbar spine

In 2009, Jaseng Hospital of Oriental Medicine performed a survey, asking patients with low back pain about their occupations. 2282 people had responded this question. Our hypothesis was that blue color workers were proned to low back pain due to overuse of lumbar joints at work. However, interestingly, the result showed that white colors, 72.4%, get back pain more frequently than blue colors, 27.6%.

Human spine has intervertebral discs, made of gelatin, between each vertebra. The intervertebral disc which is supported and surrounded by ligaments and muscles plays an important role in shock absorption. Strong pressure on the intervertebral joints causes them to escape from their original position and push spinal nerve roots. This phenomenon, herniated intervertebral disc, causes pain on lumbar area. The purpose of the survey was to investigate what tasks pose too much pressure on the intervetebral joints.
Research by Nachemson and Wilke et al. measured the amount of pressure on the disc while performing daily tasks. According to the research, tasks that cause higher intervertebral pressure were side lying, sitting position and carrying heavy items. The most interesting finding was that a sitting posture with turtle neck position doubled intervertebral pressure compared to a normal sitting posture. Another finding was the different amount of pressures among a variety of sitting positions. Sitting without any movement for a long time decreased muscular strength on lumbar area and easily caused abnormal alignment on spine and pelvis.
As seen on the survey and research, the worst task on lumbar area is a sitting posture for a long time without any movement. This is why more office workers were suffering from low back pain than blue color workers on the survey.

JASENG delivered a lecture for RSMU's surgical specialists on Oriental 'Non-Surgical Spine & Joint Treatment'.

On March 16th, Dr. Shin Joon-Shik lectured Oriental Non-surgical Spine Treatment in Russian State Medical University (RSMU hereunder) of Moscow, Russia, in representation of Jaseng Hospital of Oriental Medicine, the spine specialist duly designated by Health & Welfare Ministry of Korea.

RSMU, the best medical university in Russia affiliating about 80 medical facilities across the world including East-European bloc, Germany, France has a centurial history of medicine and 10,000 students enrolled. Dr. Shin delivered the lecture at the invitation from school’s president N.N. Volodin where over 300 medical staffs and students of RSMU including neurosurgical, orthopedic spine specialists were in.

In lecture, Dr. Shin showed how to cure spine & joint disease in oriental ways by showing Motion Style Treatment (MST hereunder) Acupuncture, Chuna Manipulation, and proper medications, all of which have been scientifically proved. Not only delivering lecture and showing video clips of curing cases, Dr. Shin demonstrated methods to those who’re suffering from frozen shoulder and disc herniation, in showing the excellence of oriental medicine so that Russian audiences could experience and see the instant cure out of the methods.

Highly inspired by this, audiences were shooting questions regarding Jaseng’s genuine MST Acupuncture and its application.
President Volodin of RSMU added “I was deeply impressed by Jaseng’s Non-surgical Spine Cure System when I was in Medical Tourism Conference in Seoul. I wanted to share this to Russian spine specialists and that’s why Dr. Shin is here today”.
One of the participating neurosurgical specialists also added “It was interesting, especially due to the demonstration of methods. I could see great curable effect out of it. Though we’re still in need of theoretical progressions in MST Acupuncture and Chuna Manipulation, I’m sure this will definitely and readily be applicable in Russia.
Volodin also expressed his strong will for theoretical and personal interchanges to Dr. Shin. He said “Cooperation of Jaseng and RSMU, the combination of Jaseng’s technology, clinical experiences, and our excellent medical research infrastructure. I think it’s one of the greatest ideas and just like that, we both can be a great medical contributor to global society.”
Dr. Shin responded “I saw big potential here seeing their great interest on our non-surgical treatment. I’m very happy to be here today and deliver lecture. This was a great prelude of development of oriental medicine here in Russia. I truly wish RSMU to spare no efforts and labor for us on further development of oriental medicine.”
Jaseng and RSMU both will soon ink MOU and consult about various interchange programs involving student, researcher dispatch and research academy establishment.

Followed by lecture in LA Cedars Sinai Medical Center last February, Jaseng is projecting to expedite globalization of oriental medicine, beginning at Russia. They’re now in the course of introducing this to East-European bloc, where oriental medicine is lesser known compared to America, Germany, and Western Europe. Stepping forward to those countries and Russia is now establishing a foothold of oriental medicine, with its highly advanced technology.

Acupuncture

I had back pain for previous 3-5 years which came occasionally. After spending a lot of time skiing in 2009 the pain in my back became unbearable with pain travelling down my legs. I was unclear to bend and sit down for any long periods. I went to see a western doctor who recommend immediate surgery which I did not want to do. I received western physical therapy for one month but no improvement.

In april 2009 I visited Jaseng Clinic and first met Dr Song. He said that he could help me with oriental medicine. - I was doubtful.

Now, early 2010, I am completely free of pain in my back and legs. I’m doing what I could not do last year.

The treatment was not painful or intrusive and I would like to express my sincere thanks to Dr Song and all the staff at Jaseng clinic - Shilla Hotel.

Thank you.

Acupuncture + Chuna Manipulation

Dear Dr. Royer,

Thank you so much. I became like a different, healthy person the second day after I left your office. This medicine you gave me really changed me.

Now I have lots of energy even though I had to put a big art show up and talk to many people and send out hundreds of emails.

I am so grateful to you and your staff. You are the first person who understood my back that I have met for years, even though I went to other smart doctors.

- Cynthia Genn Toffey, Herniated Disc
